Each year in the United States, more than 10,000 people die as a result
of drunk driving crashes. This amounts to about 28 people a day, or one
person every 90 seconds, being killed from this preventable problem. It
is these statistics that the organization Mothers Against Drunk Driving,
MADD, wishes to decrease to zero. Founded by a mother whose daughter was
killed by a drunk driver, MADD is an organization whose goal is to eliminate
drunk driving through its events and campaigns that are held in 60 cities
across the U.S.
Funds raised through
MADD's events-Walk Like MADD, MADD Dash, and MADD campaigns-are used to make an impact
in the following ways:
- Provide emotional support and assistance with medical and legal struggles
that follow a drunk driving crash.
- Support the heroes in law enforcement who work to keep our roads safe.
- Work with state and local legislators to adopt tougher laws, including
requiring ignition interlocks for all DUI offenders, and closing the loopholes
in many existing laws.
- Support the development of technology to determine automatically whether
or not the driver is above the legal limit of .08 and failing to operate
if the driver is drunk.
