Most people have experienced a
car accident at least once in their lives. When a collision does occur, one of the
most useful products deploys to protect a driver and passenger from serious
harm. As you may have already guessed, this product is the airbag. Such
an invention is responsible for saving a countless number of lives every
year. However, like any product, they do not exist without errors.
While the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that more
than 22,000 lives have been saved by the use of airbags, the NHTSA also
records that since 1990, more than 250 airbag-related fatalities have
also occurred. Of course, this is due to the rapid speed at which these
products deploy. According to research, airbags can deploy at speeds exceeding
200 miles per hour. With this being said, if an airbag deploys too early,
a driver can come in contact with a product moving 200 miles per hour.
If an airbag deploys too late, the driver can hit the interior of the
vehicle since the airbag deflates rapidly after it is deployed.
For this reason, this NHTSA has issued strict regulations in order to make
airbags safer. However, because such requirements do not require specific
designs, only broader safety protocols are to be met, possibly creating
more room for error and driver/passenger injuries. The National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration also states that more than 19 different
automakers have been recalled to replace airbags on the passenger’s
and driver’s side. This is considered the most complex and largest
recall in United States History.
