Eligible for SSD or SSI benefits?

Our Social Security attorneys provide experienced representation in Michigan

You may have been working for 10 or 20 years, or even longer, when you realize you can no longer work due to a disability or a medical condition. Are you eligible for SSDI or SSI benefits? You may be, depending on your circumstances. The Social Security Administration offers benefits to people with disabilities through two programs, Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income.

At Goodman Acker, P.C., an SSDI lawyer in Detroit can help you get through the complicated benefits process. Call 1-866-DONT-LOSE for a free consultation. When you are represented by our law firm, you don't have to pay any fees unless we are successful in helping you obtain benefits!

We understand what folks in Michigan go through after a disability. Choose an SSDI attorney in Detroit who brings compassion and wisdom to each case.

Determining eligibility for SSDI or SSI benefits

If you have been working for five out of the last 10 years and have a disability you expect will last for at least 12 months or result in death, you may be eligible for SSDI benefits, which offer a portion of your wages (depending on how much money you earned in the past) and medical benefits.

With Supplemental Security Income (SSI), qualified applicants would receive a monthly amount of $674 for an individual and $1,011 for an eligible couple (as of 2011).

In determining SSDI eligibility, Social Security officials will consider the following:

  • Your medical condition
  • Your age
  • The extent of your physical or mental limitations
  • Your vocational training or work experience

SSI benefits are for people who are blind, disabled, or 65 years or old or older with little or no income. The program provides cash to meet basic needs for food clothing and shelter.

Even if you believe you meet the requirements for either SSDI or SSI, you may run into obstacles when applying for Social Security. The application process is complex. The government has strict definitions for various disabilities, which means who is and isn't eligible may be a difficult question to answer. In most cases, an initial application is rejected.
