Generic versions of Toprol XL, a heart drug, have recently been recalled due to the medication not dissolving properly in patients – therefore not working as they should. Toprol XL and its generic versions are beta blockers meaning they are used to treat high blood pressure and heart ailments.

The generic Toprol XL is being recalled by two large Indian manufacturers – Wockhardt and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories. Over the last two months, more than 100,000 bottles have been recalled. No injuries have been reported, however Dr. Harry Lever, a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic, has been warning about the serious side effects from generic versions of Toprol XL. These concerns were reported to the FDA in 2012.

The number of recalled bottles is relatively small compared with the 38 million prescriptions for another generic version of the Toprol XL drug, known as Metroprolol Succinate, that was filled in the US in 2013. The recalls for this medication were Class II, meaning they may cause temporary health problems.

As a result of all these recalls, the FDA is looking into the quality of generic medications that compromise nearly 80 percent of all U.S. Prescriptions (according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration).

Pharmaceutical companies manufacture hundreds of drugs each year. Even though each medication is approved by the FDA before it reaches the public, statistics show that patients are injured and killed due to drugs having dangerous side effects. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) pharmaceutical drugs kill over 40,000 people each and every year.
