What is NDMA?

NDMA is the shortened name for N-Nitrosodimethylamine, which is an impurity found in ranitidine and has also recently been detected in nizatidine, which is a substance that is chemically comparable to ranitidine.

Both ranitidine and nizatidine are histamine-2 (H2) blockers, which are substances that reduce the acid levels within the stomach.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has encountered NDMA in ranitidine and nizatidine. Ranitidine and nizatidine are active pharmaceutical ingredients in certain medications, such as Zantac, which features ranitidine.

What’s the Issue?

NDMA is a cancer-causing impurity, which is why it is alarming that it is present in everyday heartburn medications, like Zantac. The FDA recently issued a recall of the drug and alerted consumers as well as healthcare professionals of their detection of the impurity.

NDMA is an environmental contaminant known to the FDA as a probable carcinogen.

In both over-the-counter and prescription versions of Zantac drugs, the NDMA levels have been found to be well over the FDA’s safe amounts. Certain Zantac products comprise NDMA in levels 26,000 times greater than what the FDA considers to be safe.

The Recall

Zantac consumers are now taking action against the drug company for releasing a medication without accurately identifying and publicly displaying all of its health risks. Many of the people across the country who have taken action against the drug company have been diagnosed with cancer after taking Zantac on a regular basis.

If you have taken Zantac regularly, you may have grounds to receive compensation.
