We all have something we live for. For some it may be your family. For others, maybe it is your career, a hobby, a passion or a multitude of things. However, whatever reason it may be, in order to be there for what matters most we have to alive and living well.

June is observed as National Safety Month by the National Safety Council (NSC). National Safety Month focuses on reducing leading causes of injury and death on the road, at work, and in our communities and homes.

It is an annual campaign. This year's campaign theme is titled "What I Live For" and concentrates on five important topics that will help keep each and every one of us safe no matter where we live. The five important topics include:

  1. Prescription Pain Killer Abuse: Some of the most commonly abused drugs for pain include Fentanyl (Duragesic®), Hydrocodone (Vicodin®), Oxycodone (OxyContin®) and Oxymorphone (Opana®). Although prescription drug abuse affects many Americans, certain populations, such as youth, elderly and woman may be at particular risk. It's important if you are taking a prescription pain killer that you consult with your physician and understand and recognize prescription drug abuse.

  2. Emergency Preparedness: No one knows when an emergency will strike and therefore it is important that you know what to do if your daily routine is interrupted by an emergency. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides a great resource to help prepare you if a natural disaster does take place.

  3. Slips, Trips, and Falls: According to the CDC, falls are still a leading cause of injury, particularly to the elderly. Depending on how the slip and fall or trip and fall accident happened, victims injured do have rights and may be able to file a lawsuit to collect compensation for their damages.

  4. Transportation Safety: Distracted driving is the number one cause of most traffic accidents according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSA). There are three ways a drivers attention can be diverted and they include visually (eyes off of the road), manually (hands off of the wheel), or cognitively (mind off the task of driving). In fact, since this is a growing issue in our state, Michigan and many of its cities have passed ordinances that ban forms of distracted driving, such as texting while driving.

  5. Ergonomics: Ergonomic injuries can result when a person is not fitted properly to a job position. Depending on the industry and occupation, workers may be exposed to risk factors, such as lifting heavy items, bending, reaching overhead, working in awkward body postures and performing tasks repetitively. For this reason, ergonomics is a common injury among the workplace. It is important that employers and employees understand what is included in a job role and if a person is properly fitted for that position physically.
