On July 1, 2020, a new state law will come into effect that changes how motorists are able to receive coverage for no-fault Personal Injury Protection (PIP) car insurance. Whereas prior to July 1 PIP insurance protection was fixed at unlimited coverage, motorists opening new policies or who renew can now choose from several levels of coverage or opt out entirely.

The new law also affects the payment of PIP benefits for accidents occurring out of state. Our Detroit car accident attorneys explain how this affects you.

What Are My Rights Under the New Michigan Auto Insurance Law?

Under the old law, a Michigan resident who did not have PIP coverage was not covered in an out of state accident unless the vehicle they were traveling in was covered by Michigan PIP.

The new law allows Michigan residents who do not have PIP insurance to qualify for PIP coverage in out of state accidents through the Michigan Assigned Claims Plan. This coverage applies even if you were a passenger in a car accident.

With no-fault PIP insurance, you may be eligible to receive benefits that cover expenses such as:

  • Medical bills

  • Wage loss

  • Attendant care services

  • Home modification

  • Survivor loss benefits

  • And more
