On November 11, 2015, Veterans Day, Goodman Acker, P.C. hosted our 2nd annual Caring for Our Veterans benefit. The benefit was held to raise funds and collect goods for homeless military veterans throughout the city of Detroit, and we’re happy to say the response was overwhelming.
In Detroit alone, 2 out of 5 of homeless veterans are single and over half are part of a homeless family. According to many veterans, they first became homeless in (or after) 2012.
In response to the benefit, Senior Partner Gerald Acker said, “Each year, veterans both employed and unemployed fall through the cracks and become homeless. That is why, year after year, Goodman Acker and Detroit Tough Gym take the initiative to help honor our heroes and give them the support they need. We were so thrilled with the positive and overwhelming response we received from members of our community.”
The Goodman Acker, P.C. Veterans Benefit took place at the Detroit Tough Gym, located in Corktown, Detroit from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. Members of the community stopped by and donated items for the Michigan Veterans Foundation (MVF). Disposable items such as shaving cream, tooth paste, and deodorant as well as new or gently used clothing and shoes were collected. Donations were also collected prior to the event at the Goodman Acker, P.C. law offices as well as at Detroit Tough Gym.
In addition to donations being accepted, many members of the community filled backpacks and delivered several of the donated items to homeless veteran shelters in the city of Detroit on a 5k run / walk. The route started at the Detroit Tough Gym (en route to the Mariners Inn and the MVF) and finished back at the gym.
Goodman Acker is thrilled to announce that the Veterans Benefit collected over 9 truckloads of items, including clothing, coats, business suits, shoes, gloves, and hats, in addition to monetary funds donated to the cause.
“On behalf of everyone at Goodman Acker, P.C. we would like to thank everyone who donated or came out to deliver items as part of our Veterans Benefit. This year proved to be another big success and we have the community to thank for that. With your help, we have truly made a difference in the lives of many of our homeless veterans. A special thanks to Detroit Tough Gym, Mariners Inn, and the Michigan Veterans Foundation as well for their partnership with the benefit,” said Acker.
