As the spread of COVID-19 has prompted mandatory closures of schools, businesses, and workplaces, the nation’s streets have been relatively empty when compared to pre-pandemic levels of traffic. The open roads have led to more drivers speeding or otherwise behaving recklessly. Speeding has been a nationwide issue in recent months. Nearly every corner of the country has been observing strict stay-at-home orders since March 2020 when the dangers of COVID-19 became apparent. As less people are going out and traveling, the roads have been almost empty. The state of Michigan is no different than the rest of the nation. Some drivers have taken the empty roads as an invitation to drive at high speeds.
According to a report on the phenomenon from the Detroit Free Press, “Michigan State Police said complaints about speeding are the most common during the pandemic, second only to violations of physical distancing.” They have, “handed out a slew of citations over the weekend to motorists driving faster than 100 mph in northern Oakland County, and dozens more across metro Detroit throughout the month of April.”
The Dangers of Speeding and Reckless Driving
At high speeds, even minimal traffic violations can become highly dangerous and damaging. Speeding, and reckless driving at any speed, can lead to collisions and severe injuries. Some drivers have been taking advantage of the empty roads to street race, a behavior that is not only hazardous for the drivers involved but other drivers as well.
Although drivers are behaving more recklessly, the overall number of car accidents is down because there are less people on the road. However, the danger of car accidents is still present. It is important to stay aware of other drivers if you must travel during this time. If you see a driver who is speeding or driving recklessly, put as much distance between yourself and their car as you can.
