The Social Security Disability program is designed to help those who have or sustained some other form of a debilitating condition continue to make ends meet if they can no longer work in a gainful manner. You’ll have to apply and have your claim approved by the Social Security Administration, but once you do you’ll be eligible to receive different types of benefits that are designed to help you make ends meet and continue to receive the treatments you depend on.

What Benefits Are Available?

If your claim is accepted, what benefits can the Social Security Disability program provide you with? The most important one is benefit checks that provide you with supplemental income so you can continue to live. Social Security Disability insurance does not necessarily offer medical coverage, but after two years of disability benefits you do qualify for Medicare coverage, which our team can also help you with.

Most often, the amount of benefits you receive are based on several factors.

Your Social Security Disability payments are influenced by:

  • Age
  • Income
  • Number of years you have worked (and paid into the program)
  • Projected date of retirement

How Long Until I Receive Benefits?

The Social Security Administration has a mandatory five-month waiting period from the time you apply until you can receive your first benefits check. However, more often than not the process is several months longer than that, sometimes even over a year. And that’s if you don’t have to appeal your decision, which also isn’t all that uncommon. Once your claim is accepted, you’ll receive SSD backpay, which are benefits that you were owed from the onset-date of your condition but you didn’t initially receive due to your claim being denied or processing taking longer than the mandated five months.

Even though you feel as though you may not be able to afford to visit a doctor to have your condition evaluated, it’s important to make sure you have your condition checked and documented by a medical professional. You should also make sure you have a qualified and capable attorney on your side who can keep track of your claim and make sure you receive the maximum benefits you’re entitled to.
