Jordan B. Acker

Equity Partner - (248) 286-8100

Attorney Jordan B. Acker has dedicated his life to improving the country and his community. After graduating from the University of Michigan with a B.A. in History in 2006, he went to work for the Michigan Democratic Party as the Deputy Communications Director. Following the 2006 elections, he worked on staff for U.S. Representative John Conyers (D-Detroit) for the House Judiciary Committee in Washington, D.C. His focus in that position was on issues such as the powers of the president in wartime, civil rights, and the NBA labor dispute. His work with Rep. Conyers on this committee helped to create his passion for the law and lead to him attend American University Washington College of Law, where he earned his J.D. in 2010.

While in law school, Acker was the AU Editor-in-Chief of the Washington College of Law’s Legislation and Policy Brief. He maintained his academics while volunteering on several political campaigns, including President Obama’s historic 2008 campaign. After graduating from law school, he spent three months as an associate in the White House Office of Presidential Personnel before being appointed by President Obama in March of 2011 to be an attorney-advisor to Secretary Janet Napolitano at the Department of Homeland Security. While at Homeland Security, he worked on cyber, immigration, and other homeland security issues. After working in the Obama Administration for three and a half years, he decided to return to Detroit and join Goodman Acker P.C.

Growing up around the law firm, he enjoyed watching his father work hard as a Detroit personal injury attorney and fight for people’s rights. “I am truly proud to be part of the Goodman Acker law family,” he says. Being able to provide the same high level of service to clients, like his father has in his career, has been a highlight of coming back to Detroit.

Since joining Goodman Acker, Acker has focused not just on the legal side, but also in growing the firm and being hands-on in the process. He works on personal injury litigation, including auto accidents, first party claims and premises liability, as well as doing political consulting, working with several political clients. He is not only an advocate for those who have been injured and their families, but he has also been an advocate for medical providers who treat injured victims. This includes providing counsel to many physicians and medical practices in no-fault insurance issues and business practices.

Being an active participant in our community has always been important to Acker. He gives back in many ways including educating the public on their legal rights. He has presented at several Michigan Education Association (MEA) seminars, informing their members about their rights should they find themselves in the situation of a personal injury accident matter.

Acker is an active member in a number of professional organizations, including the Michigan Association for Justice, a nonprofit organization of about 1,600 members dedicated to furthering civil justice and access to the courts for the people of Michigan. He is also a member of the Board of the Detroit Federation Next Gen, Co-Captain of the Goodman Acker Come Play Detroit basketball team and is a 2015 Fellow in the Michigan Political Leadership Program, a leadership program administered through the Institute for Public Policy and Research at Michigan State University. He was also named in July 2015 as a “Detroiter to Watch” by the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit.

On November 6, 2018, Jordan was elected statewide as a Regent of the University of Michigan, with over 1.7 million votes. He will serve as the first Regent to have graduated from the University of Michigan this century. In this role, Jordan will focus on making Michigan affordable and accessible, and making the University more transparent. In addition to his professional life, he enjoys playing and watching basketball, cheering on University of Michigan sports, and spending time with his family. He is happily married to his college sweetheart, Lauren, an adjunct lecturer at Johns Hopkins University. They are proud parents of their girls, Jenna, Meredith, and their puppy, Wrigley.

“It is an honor to continue the Goodman Acker tradition of helping people in the Detroit area,” he says. “I’ve had the opportunity to live and build my career in Washington D.C., but no other place has ever felt like home.”
