Each year in the United States, more than 10,000 people die as a result of drunk driving crashes. This amounts to about 28 people a day, or one person every 90 seconds, being killed from this preventable problem. It is these statistics that the organization Mothers Against Drunk Driving, MADD, wishes to decrease to zero. Founded by a mother whose daughter was killed by a drunk driver, MADD is an organization whose goal is to eliminate drunk driving through its events and campaigns that are held in 60 cities across the U.S.

Funds raised through MADD's events-Walk Like MADD, MADD Dash, and MADD campaigns-are used to make an impact in the following ways:

  • Provide emotional support and assistance with medical and legal struggles that follow a drunk driving crash.

  • Support the heroes in law enforcement who work to keep our roads safe.

  • Work with state and local legislators to adopt tougher laws, including requiring ignition interlocks for all DUI offenders, and closing the loopholes in many existing laws.

  • Support the development of technology to determine automatically whether or not the driver is above the legal limit of .08 and failing to operate if the driver is drunk.

This year, Detroit will be hosting its signature fundraising event, Walk Like MADD, in an effort to inform Metro Detroit about the dangers of drunk driving and to make our community a safer place for all.

Details of the event:

When: August 22nd, 2015

Where: The Detroit Zoo

Time: 7am-9:30am

For those that are interested in getting involved, there are numerous ways to do so. You can join in MADD's fight against drunk driving by signing up to be a solo walker, creating and leading a team, or making a donation to the overall organization or to a specific person or team.
