Michigan law now allows motorcyclists and their passengers to choose for themselves whether or not they would like to wear a helmet while riding. There are few restrictions, but the majority of riders do have free choice. For those who do wear helmets, it is important that you not only understand how to properly use a helmet but also where you should store it, how they work, and why.

Helmet Care


Motorcycle helmets should not be stored near gasoline, cleaning fluids, exhaust fumes, or excessive heat. Storing your helmet near one of these will result in degradation of your helmet. The best procedure would be to find a flat, secure place for it, such as on your garage floor, secured on a rack, or stowed on a shelf. All helmets are different so it's important you also follow the manufacturer's care instructions for your helmet, however many will require you to use only mildest soap to clean it.

How & Why Motorcycle Helmets Work


People use helmets in the construction industry, for playing sports, or even in the military. As these are all considered helmets, different helmets are designed to do different things. A motorcycle helmet is specifically designed for the activity of riding.

There are four basic components of a bike helmet and all four components work together to provide protection. These four components include:

  1. Outer shell: What you see first. The outer shell is typically made from fiber-reinforced composites or thermoplastics so that the force is lessened before it reaches your head.

  2. Impact-Absorbing Liner: Inside the outer shell. The impact-absorbing liner is typically made of expanded polystyrene and is designed to absorb shock as the helmet stops and your head wants to keep on moving.

  3. Comfort Padding: Layer that sits next to your head. The comfort padding is typically made of soft foam-and-cloth and is designed to ensure your helmet fits snugly and is comfortable.

  4. Retention System: Also known as the chin strap. The retention system connects to each side of the shell so that the helmet stays on your head in the instance of if you are involved in a motorcycle accident.
