Detroit, Michigan, is a melting pot of cultures and cuisines. The city and the surrounding area has a variety of restaurants with food from all over the world, including several top Cuban restaurants. If you’re in the mood to experience the spice and flair of Latin American cuisine, make plans to enjoy some or all of these wonderful Cuban restaurants in the Detroit area.

Vicente’s Cuban Cuisine is a lively restaurant that brings the essence of Havana, Cuba, to downtown Detroit. If you decide to stop by for lunch or dinner, you’ll find a menu full of delicious options. Popular appetizers include the tortilla Espanola, a traditional Spanish potato and onion omelet served with red peppers, olives, and a garlic aioli sauce, as well as tamal Cubano, which is a homemade traditional Cuban tamale topped with sauteed onions, pork meat, and mojo sauce.

For your main course, consider the pollo al limon. This dish starts with a tender chicken breast that’s seasoned with fresh herbs and dipped in egg batter, white wine, and parmesan cheese. The chicken is then pan-seared until it’s golden brown, topped with lemon sauce and lemon zest, and served with white rice and sweet plantains.

You also can’t go wrong ordering the ropa vieja, which literally translates to “old clothes.” This savory traditional Cuban meal features thinly shredded seasoned beef cooked with tomato sauce, red wine, green olives, and bell peppers. This tantalizing dish is served with black beans, white rice, and sweet plantains.

Vicente’s Cuban Cuisine also offers pickup and delivery options for those who wish to bring some delightful Cuban food home. Check the schedule to find out when the restaurant will be hosting future events such as jazz music, salsa dancing (with free lessons), and a paella cooking class.

Frita Batidos

Frita Batidos has two locations in the area, which makes it easy to get the Cuban cuisine you love. Chef and owner Eve Aronoff opened the original Frita Batidos in Ann Arbor, and the Cuban-influenced restaurant quickly became a hit. She then opened a second location in the heart of downtown Detroit. The restaurant is known for its Cuban-inspired street food and for sourcing its meats, cheeses, and produce from Michigan and the Midwest as much as possible. It also features an extensive menu with enough options that all the diners in your party will be happy.

To start your meal, you choose your favorite frita, which is inspired by traditional Cuban burgers. Your options include chorizo or beef with sweet chili mayonnaise, chicken or fish with lemon-scented mayonnaise, or black bean with chipotle mayonnaise. You can then decide if you want to add some special toppings, such as cilantro-lime salsa, avocado spread, fresh jalapenos, or a sunny-side-up egg. The restaurant also offers a nice selection of side dishes, including loaded plantains, garlic cilantro fries, and coconut ginger rice.

If you want something sweet to go with your meal, pick a batido. This tropical milkshake is made with fresh fruit, crushed ice, and vanilla bean ice cream. Some popular flavors include hibiscus, passion fruit, chocolate, and coconut cream. Frita Batidos has patio seating and offers delivery and carryout options.

Romero’s Tacos and Tequila

Romero’s Tacos and Tequila is located just north of Detroit in Shelby Charter Township. While the restaurant is known for its authentic Mexican street food, its menu also includes some savory Cuban-inspired options. If you decide to stop by for lunch, consider the torta. This delicious dish features your choice of grilled steak, pulled pork, or dry-cured ham on a buttered telera roll along with lettuce, tomato, avocado, onion, mayonnaise, and pickled jalapenos.

For dinner, you’ll love the whole tilapia frita. This filling dish includes fried tilapia, rice, black beans, lettuce, and pico de gallo in a corn or flour tortilla. Another popular option is the camarones al mojo de ajo, which has shrimp sauteed in a garlic jalapeno sauce, rice, black beans, and your choice of corn or flour tortillas. Don’t forget to check out the beverage menu for a refreshing drink to go with your meal. Popular options include horchata, sparkling non-alcoholic sangria, and Jarritos sodas. If you want to bring a meal home for the whole family, Romero’s Tacos and Tequila has takeout options available.

Waves Chill & Grill

Waves Chill & Grill is a fun restaurant, located 14 miles northeast of Detroit in St. Clair Shores, that serves up an excellent variety of American and Caribbean-inspired cuisine. This is where you’ll find one of the best Cuban sandwiches in the area. This popular sandwich includes pork, smoked ham, salami, Swiss cheese, dill pickle slices, and spicy mustard served on warm Cuban bread. To make your meal complete, your Cuban sandwich comes with a dish of tasty coleslaw.

If you arrive with a big appetite, order the Cuban combo. This meal includes a full Cuban sandwich and a half-serving of Cuban salad, which has lettuce, ham, Swiss cheese, tomatoes, olives, parmesan cheese, and a garlic vinaigrette dressing. You can also fill up with a bowl of the delicious Cuban black bean soup or the Havana onion soup, which is baked with provolone and served with garlic croutons.

The seafood paella is another dish served by Waves Chill & Grill that doesn’t disappoint. This delectable savory meal includes sauteed shrimp, mussels, and crab legs served in a light seafood broth with onions, peppers, tomatoes, and Bahama rice. It comes with your choice of soup or salad for a nicely filling meal.
